Helping others is a major aspect of Turkish festival traditions, especially unfortunate children. One of these holidays is Ramadan. This year, the Turkish American Association of Alabama selected the organization Pathways.Pathways provides support for homeless mothers and their young children; the TAAA, along with the Turkish community, collected gifts for the children, ranging from toys to school uniforms and casual clothing. Several ladies from the TAAA came together one morning to personally give the gifts to the organization, hoping to meet the women and children they were bringing unimaginable amounts to joy to! The young mothers appreciated the gifts dearly, giving everyone who helped another successful and complete mission to help others!
Moody Elementary School held an art show on March 8, 2011 dedicated to the culture and traditions of Turkey. The TAAA provided a sampler with several choices of delicious Turkish food, like köfte, chicken kebap, pilav, lahmacun, and baklava. The TAAA also introduced the community to commonly used spices in Turkish food. Students from Moody Elementary created and showed guests a presentation about Turkey during the event. |
In an endeavor to raise money for the organization, the TAAA put together a game night for its members and friends on March 13, 2011. The event consisted of a backgammon tournament, Marbling art, fortune telling and much more. The TAAA also sold t-shirts, specially designed by Hulya Aybek. Ferhat Zengul showed the TAAA and friends the fascinating art of Marbling art “Ebru”; all proceeds from his masterpieces went to the TAAA. A big thanks goes to all those who helped prepare a delicious feast for our members and guests for Game Night! Congratulations to Patricia Yayman for winning the backgammon tournament! |
