Latif Bolat, a well-known Turkish musician and folk music singer in the United States, was invited to perform in UAB’s Hulsey Hall by the Birmingham International Center (BIC) as an event for Spotlight on Turkey. Free to everyone, the event took place on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Mr. Bolat sang and played the Saz, a century old Turkish instrument, and the piano, introduced the audience to a reading of Turkish poetry, which he often translated. His wonderful performance led to a pleading audience for an encore. After the concert, a reception, catered by the TAAA, was held for the attendants.

On November 27, 2010, BIC held a book signing and discussion with Sheila Kaufman for her book, The Turkish Cookbook: Regional Recipes and Stories. The book signing was a part of the yearlong event “Spotlight on Turkey” by the Birmingham International Center. A big thank you goes to Aynur Ates-Vloon, President of the TAAA, who provided samples from the cookbook for guests as a taste test.
